Straight answers

How much is a website for an electrician or plumber?
From £49 a month including VAT, with no upfront cost. That covers the build, hosting, daily backups, security and small ongoing changes, and the price is fixed in writing before anything starts. Add-ons like instant enquiry replies and missed-call texts are priced the same way.
I get my work through Checkatrade and word of mouth. Do I need a site?
Directories put you side by side with every competitor and charge for the privilege, and a recommendation still gets checked online before the call. Your own site is the one place where the customer sees only you, your registrations and your work, and it is yours rather than rented.
How quickly can it be live?
Typically within a week of agreeing the content. Registrations, photos of your work and your service areas are the main things needed from you; the writing, build and setup are all handled for you.
Do I own my website?
Yes, completely. The site, the domain and the content are yours. There is no lock-in and no ransom if you ever leave. That is not true of every builder, so it is worth asking whoever you speak to.

Why it matters here

Certified, and able to come out

Electrical and gas work is regulated, and customers know it even when they could not name the rules. Before they ring, they are looking for the registration that says you are allowed to do the work: Gas Safe for anything on gas, NICEIC or NAPIT for electrical work, WaterSafe for plumbing. If your site states those plainly, with your registration number where it can be checked, the trust question is settled before the first word is spoken. If it does not, the cautious customer keeps scrolling until they find someone whose site does.

The second question is speed. A tripped consumer unit or a leak under the kitchen floor is not a browsing job; it is one search, from a phone, and a call to whoever answers first. That means a number that can be tapped with a thumb from the top of the page, call-out terms stated up front, and a text back when you are up a ladder and the call goes to voicemail. Miss the call with nothing in place and the job is already someone else's.

Not everything is an emergency, and the planned work pays better anyway. A rewire, a new consumer unit, a bathroom refit or a boiler swap starts as a quote request, usually in the evening. A short form that asks what the job is, where it is and when they want it done lets you price properly and reply once, instead of playing phone tag for two days with someone who has already asked two other firms.

What turns a search into a booked job

Registrations stated honestly
The schemes you actually hold, named with your registration number so anyone can verify them. No borrowed badge walls, because customers have learned to distrust them.
Emergency call-out route
A tap-to-call button at the top of every page, call-out terms in plain sight, and a missed-call text back so the burst-pipe customer is not straight onto the next number.
Quote capture for planned work
A short form asking what, where and when, so you can price a rewire or a bathroom refit from real information instead of a two-day game of phone tag.
Service areas and call-out terms
The towns and villages you actually cover, stated clearly, so the jobs that reach you are ones you would take and out-of-area callers do not eat your evening.

The difference

Secure by default, not as an afterthought

A plumber's or electrician's invoice is exactly what bank-detail switch fraud imitates: a criminal emails your customer as you and asks for payment to a different account. Every site I build comes with email authentication (SPF, DKIM and DMARC) set up as standard, which makes sending email as your business much harder, alongside full encryption and hardened hosting that protect the enquiry details customers trust you with.

A roofing demonstration build, shown because the trades pattern is the same one an electrician or plumber needs: a services grid, an emergency call-out route, a gallery of real work and a trust strip. Example reviews are clearly labelled as examples.

A fictional business created to show build quality. Not a live client site.
